Historical Bitcoin Investment Calculator

What would a single past Bitcoin purchase have been worth on another completed day? Use exchange-recorded daily closes, not a hypothetical return assumption.

Historical results are not evidence of future returns. The price request sends selected dates to Coinbase, but never your investment amount.

Set your assumptions

All money is USD. Defaults are examples, not your saved tracker values. Edit inputs, then select Calculate.

What this calculator answers

Enter an original dollar investment and two dates. When you select Calculate, the browser requests the matching Coinbase Exchange BTC-USD daily closing prices. Your investment amount and fee assumptions stay in the page. The tool estimates coins purchased, gross value, fee-adjusted value, total return, and annualized return for that historical interval.

How the calculation works

Each requested date represents a completed UTC day. The model requires an exact timestamp match in the exchange response and does not substitute a nearby date or invent a missing price. The buy fee is deducted from the original investment before dividing by the purchase close. The resulting BTC quantity is multiplied by the valuation close; an optional sale fee is deducted to show hypothetical net proceeds. CAGR uses elapsed days divided by 365.2425.

BTC purchased = investment × (1 − buy-fee rate) ÷ purchase close. Net proceeds = BTC × valuation close × (1 − sale-fee rate).

Worked example

As a hand-checkable illustration, a $1,000 investment with a 1% buy fee at a $10,000 purchase price acquires 0.099 BTC. Valued later at $20,000, that is $1,980 gross. A 1% sale fee leaves $1,960.20, giving a $960.20 gain and a 96.02% total return. These rounded example prices explain the arithmetic; the interactive result uses the actual exchange closes for your dates.

How to interpret the result

Total return describes the selected interval, while CAGR expresses the same change as a constant annual rate. Neither tells you how smooth the journey was, the largest drawdown, or the probability of repeating the outcome. CAGR is unavailable when the investment is zero or the two dates are identical. A same-day comparison can still show the cost of buy and sale fees.

Assumptions and limitations

The selectable range begins July 20, 2015 and ends before the current UTC day; availability is still subject to the exchange’s records. Coinbase prices can differ from other exchanges and from the price your order would have received. An outage, rate limit, or missing candle produces an explicit unavailable message. Taxes, slippage, custody costs, intervening trades, and historical availability of a particular fee schedule are not modeled.

Privacy and practical next steps

The calculator does not connect to a wallet or change the Bitcoin Goal Tracker. Financial inputs remain in page memory except the shared live/manual price preference, most recent custom price, and last validated quote, which use isolated localStorage keys. Copying results is optional and includes financial inputs. Historical prices are requested directly from Coinbase only when you select Calculate; the provider receives the dates and standard connection information.

Once you have a budget you want to follow, enter it yourself in the tracker. Keep the model separate from your actual purchase records, and revisit assumptions when your circumstances change. Read the related Bitcoin planning guide for context.

Useful questions

Why not use the current day?

The current UTC daily candle may still be changing. Only completed days are accepted so the valuation is clearly a daily close rather than an unlabeled live quote.

Is this a price forecast?

No. It describes a selected historical purchase and valuation. Past results are not evidence of future returns.
