What this calculator answers

This is a deployment-of-existing-cash question, not a recurring-paycheck savings calculator. Both alternatives begin with the same total budget. Lump sum puts it into Bitcoin now, while DCA keeps some money in cash until later purchases. The difference is time exposed to the modeled Bitcoin price path, not a different savings effort.

How the calculation works

Lump sum buys at the starting price. DCA divides the budget into equal purchases, with the first today and the remainder at the start of successive months. The assumed effective annual Bitcoin price change is converted into a monthly factor. Each purchase buys a quantity of BTC at that month’s modeled price. Both holdings are valued at the same final date, and uninvested DCA cash earns zero.

DCA BTC = sum of [(total budget ÷ number of purchases) ÷ purchase-month BTC price]. Ending value = BTC acquired × horizon price.

Worked example

With $12,000 available, a $100,000 planning price, and 0% price change, an immediate purchase acquires 0.12 BTC. Twelve monthly purchases of $1,000 each acquire 0.01 BTC apiece, also totaling 0.12 BTC. Both end at $12,000 with no fees. Under a steadily falling price assumption, later DCA purchases buy more coins; a steadily rising assumption reverses that effect. Neither smooth path represents actual monthly volatility.

How to interpret the result

Start by selecting a spreading period you could actually follow. A shorter period increases early exposure; a longer period retains more cash for longer. Then compare the negative, moderate, and aggressive example price changes. An apparent advantage is conditional on that specific path. Two volatile paths with the same endpoint can produce different DCA coin totals, so a constant-growth comparison is a sensitivity exercise rather than a backtest.

Assumptions and limitations

Trading fees, cash interest, taxes, bid-ask spreads, execution timing, and interruptions to the schedule are excluded. The horizon must be long enough for every DCA purchase. No future purchases are inferred beyond the specified budget. Privacy and practical next steps

The calculator does not connect to a wallet or change the Bitcoin Goal Tracker. Useful questions

Does DCA guarantee a profit or a lower average price?

No. It spreads entry timing. It can accumulate more or fewer coins than buying immediately depending on the actual sequence of prices.
