What this calculator answers
FIRE means financial independence, retire early. Here, independence is an expense-based portfolio threshold rather than a particular birthday or a $1 million milestone. Enter the annual income your investments would need to support, include your non-BTC savings, and set a sustainable contribution budget. The calculator searches for the first month the modeled portfolio reaches that threshold.
How the calculation works
The starting real-dollar threshold is desired annual income divided by the withdrawal percentage. Each month the model grows the portfolio, adds the scheduled contribution, and inflates the threshold. Contributions can increase once a year, beginning after the first twelve payments. The search continues through age 100; the expandable projection instead stops at your chosen target age so you can inspect the plan you actually entered.
First modeled FIRE month = first month when portfolio value ÷ inflation factor ≥ annual income ÷ withdrawal rate.
Worked example
With $120,000 already invested, $1,000 saved per month, no growth, and no inflation, a $12,000 annual income target at 4% requires $300,000. The $180,000 gap takes 180 monthly contributions, or 15 years. Starting at age 35 produces a modeled FIRE age of 50. A 3% inflation assumption moves the target upward over time, so the zero-inflation answer no longer applies.
How to interpret the result
An earlier crossing can be caused by larger contributions or more optimistic assumptions. Inspect which input changed before interpreting the date as progress. If you are already above the threshold, the result is your current age; this does not mean immediate retirement is advisable. If no crossing appears by age 100, the calculator says so rather than extrapolating an implausible date beyond its search boundary.
Assumptions and limitations
Crossing a threshold is not the same as sustaining withdrawals afterward. A poor return sequence immediately after retirement can matter even when a smooth average-growth path looks adequate. No employment interruptions, benefits, health costs, pensions, taxes, or post-retirement portfolio drawdown are modeled. All assets are treated as financially available, which may not match actual account withdrawal rules.
Privacy and practical next steps
The calculator does not connect to a wallet or change the Bitcoin Goal Tracker. Financial inputs remain in page memory except the shared live/manual price preference, most recent custom price, and last validated quote, which use isolated localStorage keys. Copying results is optional and includes financial inputs. Only a request for a normalized BTC/USD quote is sent to Stack2One's internal price endpoint; calculator financial inputs are not sent or included in custom analytics events.
Once you have a budget you want to follow, enter it yourself in the tracker. Keep the model separate from your actual purchase records, and revisit assumptions when your circumstances change. Read the related Bitcoin planning guide for context.
Useful questions
Why is FIRE different from the Retirement Calculator?
Retirement readiness tests income at a date you choose. FIRE searches for the first modeled date you reach an income-based threshold. Both share consistent mathematics, but answer different planning questions.
